Put You, not your Habits, in Control of your life


Lets get real - New Year’s resolutions, even when we are dead serious when we make them, are no more resolute than a wish. Making a resolution has about as much chance of helping us attain the life we want as tossing a coin into a fountain. In fact, tossing a coin may have a better chance of success because it employs a few key tools of success: spending the quarter (investment), making a pilgrimage to the fountain (taking action), making the wish (creative visualization).
 
But in the end, tossing a coin in the fountain is really just a wish because it lacks grounding in proven tools of change.
 
In case you are expecting a ‘lets get real’ speech that evangelizes discipline, hard work, and sacrifice as the most important agents of change, you will be happy to hear that reliance on these is actually more a deterrent to change because the most important agent of change is a feeling of effortless ease.

Through using proven change techniques including proper planning and a good support system, yes, it can be almost effortless -  if you avoid the most common missteps.

Misstep – Trying to change too much at once
When we try to change many things at once overwhelm becomes the dominant experience. And when overwhelm is engaged we retreat back to our familiar habits.
 
​Misstep – Making a generic goal
‘Lose weight’ or ‘Be more compassionate’ are too generic to really focus on so they become slippery and we lose our grip on them.
 
​Misstep – Setting arbitrary or unrealistic deadlines
Deadlines can be great motivators but they need to be realistic. A vital component of success is to establish specific and attainable benchmarks.
 
​Misstep – Abandoning the goal after one missed action
When we put a lot of determination behind our resolution it often turns it into an all or nothing mindset. So when we make one backslide, which lets face it, we will backslide, then we abandon the whole project.
 
​Misstep – Being idealistic in goal setting
When we focus on becoming the ideal version of ourselves we are living in the myth of perfection rather than what is attainable. This keeps us in constant self-criticism which steals our energy and sets us up for failure.
 
​Misstep – Failing to use proven agents of change
When we forget to use or don’t have access to key components of successful and effortless change (like accountability structures, motivation, progress tracking, just to name a few) we set ourselves up for failure.
 
The most powerful misstep of all:
 
Misstep – Not believing you are powerful enough to overcome the resistance to truly change
While we might be facing some real challenges to making a change in our lives (time, energy, other commitments, etc), our biggest challenges are confidence and the habits of our own excuses. If, when you think of what you want to change and the next thought is ‘yes, but…’, then the excuse monster is in charge. It is time to take your power back.

Why work with me?


​I have always been a seeker, a questioner, looking for truth and how to live a better life, how to heal myself. I am an introvert who loves ideas. And I have lived with various levels of depression all of my life. In my twenties and thirties I sought to heal myself through investigating deeply into many Eastern spiritualities through reading, in depth classes, and retreats with masters. I was striving to fix myself through listening to the wisdom that has remained alive through the ages. I seeped my mind in interactions with different ways of thinking about and living in the world. That wisdom opened my mind to new perceptions and I did change; my suffering diminished and I began to move through the world in a different way. I even created Retreat Finder, as a way to help fellow seekers like myself. But struggle and depression continued to be my primary experience, and deepened with a series of health crises that I now understand to be Environmental Illness aka Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.

I mention all of this because it was not until I began working through my inquiry directly with another person that my life truly began to change for the better. There is a magic that happens when working with a trained person through the act of engaging in dialog; hearing responses from another person to my own thoughts, perceptions and interpretations of wisdom teachings; being directly challenged; and exploring through questions tailored to evoke an opening in my perspective.
I just needed a bit of assistance in 
getting out of my own way 
and

accountability to actually show up for myself.
Through this process I moved from living in what ‘could be’ or ‘should be’ and dropped into living in what is; the present moment, the truth of the lived experience and all the possibility that exists in every moment (if we are brave enough to see it), and the truth of my own heart. I began to live in my authenticity. I just needed a bit of assistance in getting out of my own way and accountability to actually show up for myself.

​This is why I became a certified professional life coach. I have experienced the power of coaching for myself and see that one-on-one or small group engagement is what is needed to move from just thinking about how things can be better to actually changing your life.
